Story

She’d never been the kind of girl who liked dolls. She remembered being fascinated by her brothers’ toy soldiers, their cricket bats and footballs when she was little. The older she grew, the more the world tried to tell her what she liked was wrong. That she had picked the wrong side. That no one would love or appreciate a girl like her.

It felt like an endless battle that she would soon tire of fighting. A debate she could no longer participate in, for her voice was hoarse. Now, in her 20s, she realised that there was no one way of being a woman. That she could love both dolls and cars. Family and ambition. Freedom and commitment. She stared at the photograph of the vibrant, trumpet-shaped flower before her. It was a dancing doll. And, like her, it was beautiful, unconventional and looked like nothing she’d ever seen before.
